I’d never told my husband’s family that I could speak German. It was a secret I kept close, hoping it would keep the peace. But one ordinary afternoon, as I lay in the kitchen, I heard the unmistakable click of a German word echoing across the hallway. My mother‑in‑law leaned toward my sister‑in‑law, her brows furrowed, and whispered, “SHE STILL DOESN’T KNOW, DOES SHE?”
Peter and I had been married three years, our first child a few months old, and a second on the way. I’m an American, he’s German, and when his new job pulled us back to his homeland, family visits became a regular rhythm in our lives.
Every time the household buzzed with German chatter, I could feel the sting of being left out. The relatives would drop hushed remarks about my dress, my accent, even my swelling belly. I stayed silent, curious to see how far the comments would stretch, pretending I didn’t understand the words.
When the second baby arrived, the family’s excitement was palpable. That’s when I caught them again. My mother‑in‑law’s whisper, layered over the din, sounded eerily familiar: “She still doesn’t know, does she?”

His face drained of colour. The fear in his eyes was a raw shock to me. “WHAT HAVEN’T YOU TOLD ME?!” I demanded, the anger thick in my voice.
