“You sold the house without giving us the money?”
My son’s voice echoed through the closing office before the attorney had even finished organizing the paperwork.
Andrew stood at the end of the polished conference table, both palms pressed against the wood. His wife, Lauren, remained near the window, gripping her phone while late-afternoon traffic rolled through downtown Columbus beneath a gray sky.
Less than twenty minutes earlier, the sale of my family home had been finalized.
After taxes, repairs, and closing costs, the proceeds—just over eight hundred thousand dollars—had already been transferred.
Not into my checking account.
Not into Andrew’s business.
Every cent now belonged to a protected education trust for my four-year-old granddaughter, Bella.
Andrew stared at me as though I had betrayed him.
“I told you exactly what I planned,” I said calmly.
“You said you were protecting Bella’s future.”
“That’s exactly what I did.”
