My name is Rahul. I earn my living working for a small water delivery service in a peaceful neighborhood located on the outskirts of Delhi, India.
The work involves physical labor and long days. But it provides steady income that supports my family.
Among all the customers I serve regularly, there was one elderly gentleman who would ultimately teach me an unforgettable lesson about generosity and compassion.
Every single day without exception, this seventy-five-year-old man placed an order for fourteen large twenty-liter water containers.
The first time I received his order, I naturally assumed he might be running a small restaurant or purchasing water on behalf of several neighboring families.
However, when I arrived at his address to make the delivery, I was genuinely surprised by what I found. He lived completely alone in an old, modest house situated at the end of a quiet lane.
What struck me as particularly unusual was his behavior during deliveries. He never invited me inside his home.
Instead, he would open the door only slightly. He would hand me payment in an envelope through the narrow opening. Then he would gesture for me to leave all the water containers outside his door.
I would carefully arrange all fourteen containers by his entrance and depart. There were never any sounds coming from inside the house that might explain the enormous water usage.
I couldn’t stop wondering about the situation. How could one person possibly need that much water every single day?
Growing Concern About an Unusual Pattern
After approximately two weeks of making these daily deliveries, my concern began to increase significantly.
Even a large family typically uses only one or two water containers per week under normal circumstances. Yet this elderly man living alone was ordering fourteen containers daily.
One afternoon, I finally gathered enough courage to ask him a polite question.
“Sir, may I respectfully ask why you require so much water every day?”
He responded with a soft, gentle smile. He said absolutely nothing in reply. Then he quietly closed the door.
That mysterious smile remained in my thoughts for days afterward.
I began to worry about several possibilities. Was someone taking advantage of this elderly man financially? Was something concerning happening inside that house that I should know about?
The questions kept circulating in my mind during every delivery.
Making the Difficult Decision to Contact Authorities
After several more days of increasing anxiety about the situation, I finally made the decision to contact the police.
I explained the unusual circumstances to them. An elderly man living alone. Ordering massive quantities of water daily. Never allowing anyone inside. Offering no explanation.
The officers agreed that the situation warranted investigation.
The following day, I returned to his house accompanied by two police officers.
I knocked on the door as usual.
The elderly gentleman opened it calmly, showing no signs of alarm or distress at seeing uniformed officers standing there.
