The tired soldier, out of breath, approached the kind nun. “Please,” he replied, “may I hide under your skirt? I’ll explain everything later.” The nun, with a compassionate heart, complied.
A moment later, two gendarmes burst in, their voices heavy with urgency. “Sister,” they asked, “did you see a soldier fleeing this way?”
The nun, lighthearted, said, “He went that way.” As the gendarmes hurried away, the soldier cautiously emerged from under her skirt. “Sister,” he replied gratefully, “I can’t get you one. You see, I was desperately seeking to be sent to the front.”
The nun, understanding his fear, said, “I understand access to him.”
