At my sister’s wedding, she humiliated me in her speech—calling me a “single mom no one wants.” My parents laughed along… until the groom suddenly stood up, took the mic, and the entire room went silent.

I took a seat near the back, hoping to stay invisible. Evan focused on his dinner, fascinated by the string lights above us, blissfully unaware of the tension humming beneath the surface. For a moment, I allowed myself to believe the evening might pass without incident.

Then came the speeches.

Vanessa lifted her champagne glass, smiling as she addressed the crowd. At first, her words sounded gracious, rehearsed—but then her tone shifted. She turned toward my table, her gaze locking onto me as if she had been waiting for this exact moment.

“I want to thank my family,” she said, her voice light but sharp underneath. “Even the ones who didn’t exactly earn their happy endings.”

A ripple of laughter spread across the tent. Heat crept up my neck.

She continued, her smile widening. “My sister is a single mother,” she added, pausing for effect. “Unwanted, apparently.”

Laughter erupted louder this time. And then my mother’s voice cut through it, clear and unapologetic. “She’s damaged goods!”

The room responded as if it were harmless humor. Glasses clinked. People chuckled. I looked at my father, hoping—just once—he would stop it. Instead, he covered his mouth, his shoulders shaking slightly as he tried to suppress a laugh.

Evan’s small hand found mine. “Mom?” he whispered, confused.

That was the moment everything shifted.
