The board chair, Margaret Ellis, called the meeting to order and introduced the voting representative for the majority shareholder. When she said Amelia’s name, the room fell into a different kind of silence—the kind that comes when people suddenly understand who holds real authority.
Ethan’s composure cracked. He insisted it couldn’t be true, that he would have been informed. Margaret corrected him calmly: he had been informed of the ownership structure, just not the identity behind it. That detail had never been his to know.
When the meeting moved forward, Amelia added an item to the agenda.
