I saw what happened that night.” The prison director instantly raised his hand. “Stop the procedure.” There was someone else in the room. My uncle Rubén. According to him, he had come “to say goodbye to his sister-in-law.” But the moment Mateo spoke, all the color drained from his face. He stepped backward. Then another step. Mateo lifted his trembling hand and pointed directly at him. “It was him. And he told me that if I ever talked, Sofía would disappear too.” My heart stopped beating for a second. Because in that instant, memories I had buried deep inside myself came rushing back like knives. Rubén was the one who found the weapon. Rubén was the one who called the police. Rubén was the one who insisted my mother was guilty. And now, in front of everyone, he was trying to reach the door. “Don’t listen to him,” he stammered. “He was just a child.
