“911, what is your emergency?”
Claire Johnson had been answering emergency calls for a decade, but that night she felt a chill sweeping her back. On the other side of the line was the voice of a small, trembling girl, broken by crying. I could barely talk.
“Dad’s snake … is so big that it hurts me a lot,” the girl whispered with a fear impossible to ignore.
For a moment, Claire tried to understand the words literally. He thought of a dangerous pet, in some strange accident, but the girl’s tone immediately told him that something much more serious was abdo lbasl happening. In the background of the call were footsteps, a crunching door and a male voice speaking in the distance. Doors and windows
Claire kept her calm in a soft, firm voice.
