His voice echoed through the corridor as he shouted about fraud and lawsuits.
Arthur simply smiled from his bed.
“Now they can’t touch us,” he murmured.
And they never could.
For the next two years, we shared that suite as husband and wife, spending our evenings reading aloud and watching the sun disappear beyond the old oak tree in the courtyard.
When he passed away peacefully last week, I believed the struggle had finally ended.
I thought all that remained for me were treasured memories and the quiet sorrow of widowhood.
A week after the funeral, however, Mr. Vance arrived at the suite carrying a thick manila envelope.
There was a weight in his expression that I could not understand.
