The night was supposed to be peaceful.
The small house in a quiet suburb of California sat beneath dim street lamps, the neighborhood wrapped in stillness. Inside, Sophia Bennett rested her hands gently over her belly. She was only a few months pregnant. Though her body ached from long shifts as a nurse in Los Angeles, her heart was full of fragile hope.
“You’ll be loved,” she whispered softly to the unborn life within her. “I promise.”
But hope did not live everywhere in that house.
Her husband, Ryan Miller, had grown colder with each passing day. Once he had been charming, the kind of man whose laughter filled a room, the kind who promised her the world. Now that laughter was reserved for another woman.
Vanessa Lopez.
Vanessa was glamorous and cunning, a woman who carried herself with confidence and whispered poison into Ryan’s ears. Slowly, steadily, she convinced him that Sophia was not the loyal wife he believed her to be.
That evening, Sophia had prepared a simple dinner. Her heart fluttered with excitement. Earlier that day, during her hospital shift, she had seen the baby’s heartbeat on the ultrasound screen.
She wanted to share that joy with Ryan.
She waited patiently by the table.
When the front door finally slammed open, she knew immediately something was wrong.
Ryan staggered inside, the smell of alcohol heavy around him. His eyes burned with anger.
“Whose child is it, Sophia?” he demanded.
His voice cut through the quiet like broken glass.
Sophia froze.
“What are you talking about?”
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“It’s yours, Ryan,” she said quickly. “This is our baby.”
But Ryan no longer believed her.
Vanessa’s lies echoed relentlessly in his mind. She had convinced him Sophia had been unfaithful, that the child she carried belonged to another man.
Rage consumed him.
He grabbed the wooden stick he used to repair the fence outside.
Sophia’s heart pounded violently.
She stepped backward, clutching her stomach.
“Please, Ryan,” she whispered. “Don’t. I’m carrying your child.”
The stick came down with brutal force.
It struck her shoulder.
Pain exploded through her body. Sophia cried out and collapsed to the floor, instinctively wrapping her arms around her stomach.
“Ryan, stop!” she begged through tears. “For the baby’s sake!”
But jealousy had blinded him.
The stick struck again.
Each blow landed heavier than the last, fueled by a betrayal Ryan imagined but had never proven. Sophia curled inward, trying desperately to shield her stomach.
Every part of her focused on protecting the fragile life inside.
Her body trembled with pain, but her mind clung to a single thought.
Survive.
“Stay with me,” she whispered to her baby through sobs. “Stay strong.”
Then her strength failed.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Sophia collapsed unconscious onto the living room floor.
The last thing she heard was Ryan’s voice.
“You’ll regret lying to me.”
