My 72-Year-Old Mom’s Boyfriend Always Left Before Dessert — Then My Daughter Followed Him

At just under forty minutes, footsteps came pounding up the porch.

The door burst open.

My daughter stood in the frame breathing hard, hair everywhere, cheeks streaked with tears.

And clutched against her chest was Richard’s leather tote.

“Chloe?”

She wouldn’t look at me.

“Chloe. Where did you get that.”

She shook her head.

“Don’t ask me how I got it.” Her voice cracked right down the middle. “You need to see what’s in it. And why he never stays past seven-thirty.”

She walked past me and set the bag down on the dining room table, right next to the birthday pie.

My mother stood up slowly from her chair.

“Chloe, honey. Whatever’s in there, maybe we shouldn’t—”

“Grandma. Look.”

She opened it.

What Was Actually Inside the Bag He Carried Every Sunday
I braced myself.

I had a whole list ready. Lipstick. A hotel receipt. Another woman’s photograph. Something with a name on it that wasn’t my mother’s.

The tote fell open on the table.

Old family photographs, the edges gone soft and furry from being handled.

A small wooden music box with the paint worn down to bare wood at the corners.

A stack of laminated cards, large print, each one with a picture on it. A spoon. A comb. A glass of water. A cardigan.

And a face — a photograph of Richard, maybe ten years younger, laminated onto a card with one word printed underneath in big block letters.

SON.

And sitting on top of everything, another card, hand-lettered in careful capitals and laminated like the rest:

MY NAME IS EVELYN. RICHARD IS MY SON. I AM SAFE WITH HIM.

My mother’s hand flew up to her mouth.
