“To be honest, Jill, we were all nervous. It’s hard to live up to Katie.”

“Yes, it is,” I said, watching it spin, the plaque gleaming. “You made her night. You gave her back something she thought was lost.”

“That’s what families do,” she replied. “Keith made us promise. There was never any doubt.”

Katie ran towards me, beaming. “Mom! Did you see me dance? And General Warner didn’t even step on my toes!”

I knelt down and hugged her, holding on a little longer. “You were amazing, my love. And your father… he would be so happy.”

General Warner greeted her. “It was an honor, ma’am. You made us all look good.”
