My father laughed as they walked inside.
“She doesn’t deserve a cent.”
He did not understand that in court, “deserve” means nothing.
Only proof matters.
The courtroom was old and smelled of polished wood. Judge Halloway sat on the bench, a stern woman with gray hair and eyes that missed nothing.
“Calling case 4029, Vance versus Vance,” the bailiff announced.
Mr. Sterling rose dramatically.
“Ready for the plaintiff, Your Honor.”
“Ready for the defense,” I said.
Judge Halloway looked over her glasses.
“Ms. Vance, you are representing yourself?”
“Yes, Your Honor.”
