“I know.”

“And I’m not responsible for teaching you.”

Her mouth tightened, but she nodded. “I know that too.”

We stood in the cold.

The last sentence surprised me most.

My throat tightened despite myself.

“Thank you,” I said.

She looked at me then. “Do you forgive me?”

Ethan laughed.
