Part 3: The Weight of Sacrifice
I poured her a glass of water and sat her down, listening as the story of the last two decades poured out. After graduation, her modeling career had stalled, and then her parents passed away suddenly. She had inherited their debts, not their wealth. Her brother, Leo—the one she had protected since childhood—had developed severe health complications. She had sacrificed her youth, her dreams, and her savings to ensure he received the best care she could afford.
“I don’t regret it,” she said, her voice cracking. “He’s all I have left. But it’s getting harder. I work three jobs, sleep three hours a night, and I’m terrified every day that I won’t be able to keep the lights on for him. If you’re going to pity me, please, just don’t.”
I looked at the woman who had once stood up for me when the whole world was laughing. I didn’t feel pity. I felt a duty to balance the scales of fate.
