Preston Hale’s assistant slapped his wife in the middle of a charity dinner and Preston leaned toward Miriam and whispered, “Apologize to her, or I’ll have security remove you.”

Mr. Alden removed the first document, but Preston reached across the table and tried to seize it. Two security officers caught his arms before his fingers touched the page.
“Three nights ago,” the attorney said, “Mr. Hale transferred eleven million dollars from a restricted foundation account into a company controlled by Vanessa Cole.”
Vanessa’s swollen face drained of color.
“That’s a lie,” she whispered.
Mr. Alden placed a bank authorization beside the deed to Whitcomb House. Preston’s signature was at the bottom. Vanessa’s was beneath his.
Preston turned on her. “You said that account was cleared.”
The room heard every word.
Miriam watched his anger replace his charm. He had just confirmed the transfer himself.
Then Mr. Alden lifted a second envelope.
“This contains the security recording from Mr. Hale’s office,” he said. “Including the conversation in which they planned to declare Mrs. Hale mentally unfit.”
Preston stopped breathing.
