Homemade pickles have been a kitchen favorite for generations. Recently, one simple combination has been gaining attention among home cooks: pickled red onion and ginger. It’s colorful, easy to prepare, and adds a bold, tangy flavor to many everyday meals.
Unlike many viral recipes that promise unrealistic health benefits, this homemade pickle is best appreciated for its fresh ingredients, delicious taste, and versatility in the kitchen.
What Makes This Combination Special?
Red onions provide a naturally crisp texture and a mild sweetness that becomes even more enjoyable after pickling. Fresh ginger contributes a warm, slightly spicy flavor that balances the onions perfectly.
Together, they create a condiment that complements everything from grilled meats to salads and sandwiches.
Ingredients
- 1 large red onion, thinly sliced
- 2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 garlic cloves, lightly crushed (optional)
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Optional: black peppercorns, chili flakes, or fresh herbs
How to Make It
Step 1: Prepare the Vegetables
Peel the onion and slice it into thin strips. Peel the ginger and slice it as thinly as possible. If using garlic, lightly crush the cloves.
Step 2: Make the Pickling Liquid
In a small saucepan, combine the vinegar, water, sugar, and salt. Heat gently while stirring until the sugar and salt dissolve. There’s no need to bring the mixture to a full boil.
Step 3: Fill the Jar
Place the onion, ginger, and garlic into a clean glass jar. Add any optional spices or herbs if desired.
Step 4: Pour the Brine
Carefully pour the warm pickling liquid over the vegetables until they are completely covered.
Step 5: Cool and Refrigerate
Allow the jar to cool to room temperature before sealing it with a lid. Refrigerate for at least 24 hours before serving. The flavor continues to develop over the next few days.
