That afternoon, Lucy arrived home early. Ethan was playing soccer in the backyard with Edward. As soon as he spotted his mother, he raced across the grass and wrapped his arms tightly around her waist.
Lucy smiled as she held her son close. Her victory had never been about Serena’s public humiliation, Brenda’s poverty, or Julian’s prison sentence.
Her victory was listening to her son laugh without fear.
It was opening a fully stocked refrigerator each morning.
It was carefully reading every document before putting her signature on the line.
It was sleeping peacefully every night, never again waiting for another video call filled with deception.
That evening, while she tucked Ethan into bed, the little boy gazed up at her with shining eyes. “Mommy… are we rich now?”
Lucy kissed his forehead and gently pulled the blanket across his shoulders.
“We are free, Ethan. And that is worth infinitely more.”
