Kara’s words stayed in my head.
“That’s not what he told Mom.”
I sat on the edge of my bed, still wearing the clothes I had been discharged in.
“What exactly did he tell her?”
Kara hesitated.
“He said you were upset about the trip. That you told him you didn’t want to go anymore.”
I stared at the packed bag beside me.
“That’s a lie.”
“I know,” she said quietly. “But Mom was worried Caleb would miss their anniversary dinner because you were sick. He told her you insisted he go.”
I laughed once.
It wasn’t funny.
“Kara, I spent the morning in the ER. Why would I insist my husband leave me there and go on a weekend trip?”
“I don’t know,” she whispered. “That’s why I’m calling you.”
I ended the call and immediately opened my messages with Caleb.
I scrolled back through the conversation.
There it was.
11:40 AM — Caleb:
Still here. I’ll get you as soon as they discharge you.
And then:
2:07 PM — Caleb:
I’m sorry. If I don’t leave now I’ll miss dinner tonight. You’re cleared to go home, so can you grab an Uber? I already headed north.
I took screenshots of everything.
Then I noticed something I’d missed earlier.
At 1:52 PM, Caleb had sent me a photo.
It showed the dashboard of his car.
The caption said:
Almost home. Hang in there.
But the timestamp on the photo was strange.
I opened the image details.
My stomach dropped.
The photo had been taken at 11:18 AM.
More than two hours before he claimed he was still waiting for me.
Caleb hadn’t just changed his mind.
He had been planning to leave before my discharge.
I called him again.
This time, he answered.
“Hey.”
His voice sounded irritated rather than concerned.
“Why did you tell your mother that I asked you to go?”
Silence.
“What are you talking about?”
