My husband promised to pick me up after the ER discharged me. Instead, I stepped into the hospital pickup lane and found a text: he’d already left for his parents’ anniversary trip, and I should call a ride.

“Kara told me.”

Another pause.

“You’re making this into something it isn’t.”

“I was in the ER, Caleb.”

“I know.”

“You promised you’d pick me up.”

“You were discharged.”

“That doesn’t erase the promise.”

He sighed.

“I had to make a choice. My parents’ anniversary happens once. You were already going home.”

I looked at my bag.

“You took the groceries I bought.”

“They were for the trip.”

“You took my cooler.”

“You said you didn’t need it.”

“I never said that.”

He became quiet.

Then he said something that made my chest tighten.

“You need to stop making everything about you.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Everything about me?”

“You knew how important this weekend was to my family.”

“I planned your entire weekend.”

“Exactly,” he said. “And then when you got sick, suddenly everyone had to rearrange their plans around you.”

I didn’t answer.

Because I finally understood.

This wasn’t about the ER.
