Neither boy said another word. But as we entered the auditorium, I realized Daniel had no idea what was about to happen.
Part 2: The Marriage He Left Behind
People think marriages end with shouting. Mine ended in silence.
Daniel and I had been married for six years. In the beginning, we were broke and happy, eating frozen pizza on the floor of a tiny apartment because we could not afford a dining table.
Then his career took off. Promotions, money, business dinners, weekend conferences, overseas trips. I was proud of him—so proud that I ignored the new password on his phone, the late-night messages, the expensive clothes, and the way he began criticizing things he used to love about me.
Then there was Vanessa.
She worked with him, and every time I saw her at company events, she was too friendly. I told myself I was insecure.
Around the same time, after nearly two years of trying, I learned I was pregnant. I waited to tell Daniel until my next appointment confirmed it.
There were two heartbeats.
Twins.
I drove home with the ultrasound picture beside me, smiling at every red light. I planned to cook his favorite dinner and place the photo inside a small box.
But Daniel was already sitting at the kitchen table with an envelope.
“There’s someone else,” he said.
“Vanessa?”
His silence answered.
Then he said the sentence that ended whatever hope I still had.
“Vanessa is pregnant.”
