They competed in math, science, literature, history, and logic. Caleb became their strongest mathematics competitor. Noah dominated science and engineering.
They started winning.
District.
Regional.
Then state qualifiers.
One evening, they came running through the front door.
“Mom! We made Nationals!”
The National Junior Scholars Invitational would be held at a university in Washington, D.C. Hundreds of students would compete in team rounds, individual challenges, timed exams, engineering demonstrations, and a championship quiz round.
I hugged them until they complained.
Then I spent two months figuring out how to pay for the trip.
Teachers organized fundraisers. A local engineering company sponsored part of the team. Parents sold cookies, washed cars, and ran raffles.
By spring, we had enough.

So when we reached the university campus and I saw Daniel near the entrance, I genuinely thought my eyes were tricking me.
Then I saw Vanessa.
Then Lucas.
Then the banner.
