I placed my ultrasound on the table.
“I’m pregnant too.”
Daniel stared at it.
“Twins,” I said.
For one second, I saw shock, fear, maybe even happiness. Then it vanished.
He leaned back and covered his face.
“This can’t be happening.”
Those were the first words my children’s father said after learning they existed.
Part 3: Two Lives
For months, Daniel claimed he was confused. He said he had made mistakes, that he still cared about me, that he needed time.
But one question always ended the conversation.
“Are you leaving Vanessa?”
Eventually, he admitted the truth.
“No.”
Vanessa’s pregnancy was months ahead of mine, and Daniel had already moved into an apartment with her. He said he wanted to be responsible.
“Responsible to whom?” I asked.
He did not answer.
Then he said, “I can’t live two lives, Claire.”
I looked at him.
“You already created two.”
Mason was born first, and Daniel was there. When Caleb and Noah arrived four months later, he came to the hospital the following afternoon.
He stayed forty-seven minutes.
He held Caleb for five minutes and Noah for even less. Then his phone rang. Vanessa needed him. Lucas had a fever.
“I should go,” he said.
“You just got here.”
“I know. I’m sorry.”
