THE MESSAGE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Sierra’s voice softened.
“Claire, I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
“Are you okay?”
“No.”
I looked at the discharge papers on my nightstand.
“No, I’m really not.”
After we hung up, I opened the family group chat.
Thirty-seven unread messages.
Photos from the road.
A picture of the lodge entrance.
Marjorie’s champagne glasses lined up on a wooden table.
Then a message from Nolan:
Made it! Wish Claire could’ve joined us. She told me I shouldn’t miss Mom and Dad’s weekend because she was going to sleep anyway.
I stared at it.
Then I noticed the reactions.
Heart emojis.
Thumbs-up.
A few laughing faces.
Nobody questioned him.
Nobody asked whether I was okay.
I put the phone down.
Five minutes later, it buzzed again.
This time, it was Marjorie.
Claire, I hope you’re resting. Nolan said you encouraged him to come. We were worried you might feel left out, but I’m glad you’re being understanding.
I read the message twice.
Then I typed:
I never told Nolan to leave.
The message showed as delivered.
A minute passed.
Then five.
Then ten.
Finally:
This is not the weekend to create conflict.
I almost dropped the phone.
I typed:
I’m not creating conflict. I’m correcting a lie.
She didn’t respond.
Instead, someone else entered the family group chat.
Grant.
What’s going on?
Marjorie immediately replied:
Nothing. Claire isn’t feeling well.
Grant sent:
Then why are you two texting about it?
Silence.
I watched the three dots appear.
Disappear.
Appear again.
Then Grant messaged me privately.
Did Nolan really leave you at the hospital?
I answered honestly.
He didn’t leave me at the hospital. He left before I was discharged and told me to get a ride home.
There was a long pause.
Then:
That’s not what he told us.
