THE CALL TO HIS MOTHER
Nolan nodded.
“And if she gets angry?”
“Then she gets angry.”
Sierra gave a quiet breath of relief.
Nolan sat there for a long time.
Finally, he picked up his phone.
He called his mother.
Marjorie answered immediately.
“What happened? Is everything all right?”
Nolan looked at me.
Then he said:
“Mom, I lied about Claire.”
Silence.
“I told you she wanted me to go. She didn’t.”
Another pause.
“I made the decision myself.”
His mother’s voice became louder.
I couldn’t make out every word.
But I heard enough.
Nolan didn’t argue.
He didn’t blame me.
He didn’t hang up.
He simply said:
“I understand you’re disappointed.”
Then:
“But that’s my problem to handle.”
He ended the call.
The kitchen became completely silent.
Sierra smiled faintly.
“That might be the first time you’ve ever said that to her.”
Nolan nodded.
“I should have said it years ago.”
I didn’t suddenly forgive everything.
Real life doesn’t work that way.
But something changed that evening.
Not because Nolan chose me over his family.
I never wanted that.
I wanted him to stop making me the price of keeping peace with them.
