She thinks having you there might reflect badly on her.” For a moment, I nearly laughed. My younger sister had spent years removing me from family photographs, interrupting my stories, and taking credit for things I had done. To my family, I was simply Emma, the boring accountant. Emma, who wore practical coats. Emma, who never married. Emma, who supposedly sat in a cubicle working with spreadsheets. They had no idea I founded Blackwood Forensic Partners, the firm that exposed one of the state’s largest government procurement fraud operations. They didn’t know the career they mocked had paid their mortgage for four years after Dad’s construction business failed. They also didn’t know their house was legally owned by an LLC under my control. “What part of me would embarrass Vanessa?” Mom sighed. “Daniel comes from a successful family. It would refinance the property, eliminate Dad’s tax lien, and let my parents stay rent-free for another twelve months. My pen hovered above the signature line. “I understand.” “That’s it?” Mom asked. “You’re not going to cause a scene?” “No scene.” Relief entered her voice. “Good. And don’t call tomorrow. Vanessa wants everything perfect.” I ended the call. Then I removed the unsigned agreement and called my attorney. “Mark, do not submit the occupancy extension.” He paused. “Are you certain?” “Absolutely. Freeze the family emergency card and review every transaction from the past year.” The first audit report arrived before midnight. Vanessa had spent twenty-three thousand dollars on designer clothes, luxury resort reservations, and a diamond bracelet using the card I gave Mom strictly for medical emergencies. Mom had approved everything. Dad had also used my electronic signature on two loan applications without permission. They hadn’t simply excluded me from Thanksgiving. They had been taking my money while telling others I was an embarrassment. At 8:14 the next morning, someone pounded on my front door hard enough to rattle the frame.
