I reached into my folder and removed another packet. “Consulting contracts. I have spent the past year rebuilding my professional work quietly. I advise small transportation companies on compliance, fleet documentation, and contract bids.”

Russell took the packet as though it might bite him.

Adrian stared at me. “You told me you were helping friends.”

“I was.”

“You didn’t tell me you were being paid.”

“You stopped asking questions about my life long before then.”

Samuel gave Owen a faint smile at the mention of bedtime. It nearly broke me.

For the first time that morning, Adrian looked toward them. Something like uncertainty flickered across his face.
