Ava held the microphone with a steady hand, her voice echoing clearly off the high gym ceiling and filling every corner of the packed auditorium. She did not look at the shiny, gold-ribboned gift boxes Vanessa was thrusting toward them, nor did she acknowledge the woman’s painted smile. Instead, she adjusted the stands so the sound would reach the back rows, where parents and teachers sat in breathless anticipation. The silence in the room was so absolute that the hum of the air conditioning sounded like a roar.
“You called yourself our mother,” Ava said, her voice dropping all pretense of performative politeness. “You spoke to this room as if you were a long-lost protector coming home to claim what belongs to you. You said our father turned us against you. But the truth is, you turned us away yourself the very week we were brought into this world.”
