Unforgivable Return –

Emma turned her gaze directly toward the middle of the seventh row. She raised her hand, pointing straight at me. I could feel the gazes of hundreds of people turning toward my seat, but I couldn’t tear my eyes away from my daughters. My throat felt tight, and my vision blurred as the weight of eighteen lonely years seemed to lift from my shoulders all at once.

Vanessa’s face paled as the murmurs in the crowd grew louder. She coughed nervously, trying to interject. “Girls, please,” she whispered off-mic, her tone sharp with panic. “This is a misunderstanding. I’m giving you a full scholarship. A fresh start. I brought trust funds for both of you. Everything you need for college is in these boxes.”

Ava looked down at the velvet-lined gift boxes in Vanessa’s hands, then looked up into the eyes of the woman who had traded their infancy for personal freedom. There was no anger in Ava’s face, only a cold, decisive clarity that was far more powerful than rage.
